Today, I am excited to tell you, I beat resistance and got up early to write. 🙂 Ha. It was a little easier after seeing how damn prevalent resistance is in my life. After reading Steven Pressfield’s, Do the work, I can see how resistance often disguises itself in my own thoughts. “I’m too tired, I need more sleep, I will do it later.” Eww, that’s the worst. “I will do it later…”
Resistance tricks us into believing we’ll complete our oh-so-important thing later, that way we let ourselves off the hook for now. We almost gain a false sense of half-assed accomplishment saying this, “I was too tired to get up and finish my blog post this morning, so I’ll do it later this afternoon.” Well, we know how this story ends; the afternoon comes, work stressed you out, it’s time to pick up the kids from school, and crap, what about dinner? Now, you have to go to the grocery store… and ta-tad, resistance does a happy dance knowing, once again, you have not beaten it. That oh-so-important thing has moved over into the not-so-important today category and let me guess… you’ll for sure do it tomorrow. Resistance smiles and nods, “Yes, tomorrow is a good plan.”

If you have a creative side but struggle to make time to do your meaningful work, I recommend checking out Steven Pressfield’s book, Do the work. It helps uncover the role resistance plays in our lives and helps us learn how to beat it. Budget tip: check your local library to see if they carry the book, then you can buy it if you like it.
